On Thursday, December 10, 2020, the Kaduna Power Supply Company (KAPSCO) launched a solar-powered water pump to supply potable water to the Kaduna State Special Education School (KASSES); a special school for hearing and visually-impaired secondary school children. KAPSCO further stated that it would pioneer its Solar for Schools program with a pilot at KASSES.

KAPSCO, which was established by the Kaduna State Government to increase access to electricity in Kaduna by powering Off-Grid communities and helping the Kaduna public attain affordable alternative power supply, also manages the energy consumption of public buildings and provides constant, reliable power to hospitals under the Kaduna Solar for Health Program.

In partnership with the European Union and UK Department for International Development (DFID), KAPSCO has installed over 2.4MW of Solar to power Isolation centers, General Hospitals and Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) impacting over 233,000 lives annually across Kaduna State.

The launch at KASSES was done as part of the activities marking the community service week of the Kashim Ibrahim Fellowship (KIF) program – a one-year, non-partisan leadership training program for young Nigerians between the ages of 25-35 years. The KIF Fellows donated computers and accessibility software to allow the visually-challenged pupils study their learning materials.

In her statement, the Managing Director of KAPSCO, Ms. Dolapo Popoola, herself only 34 years of age thanked His Excellency, the Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai for his exemplary leadership. She also thanked Eauxwell Nig. Ltd. for their support on the project.

Kaduna State was recently recognized by the Good Governance Group of Nigeria as the Leading State in Solar for Health in Nigeria. KAPSCO plans to expand the program to schools in the Stateand has begun designing a sustainable solar power solution for KASSES as a pilot.
